“Well behaved women rarely made history”. — Eleanor Roosevelt

In a country where a girl is an encumbrance of either her parents or her husband, women today are incessantly challenging and redefining the societal norms.

I am proud to call myself a woman of grace, intelligence and compassion.

Today, on International Women’s Day let’s discuss some of the key issues faced by every woman out there-

  1. SAFETY-

It pains me to see how easy is it to make a woman feel unsafe everywhere.

A land where a girl, mother is equated with being a goddess, 27 per cent of women have experienced physical violence since the age of 15 in India.

This experience of physical violence among women is more common in rural areas than among women in urban areas.

Domestic violence cases, where women reported physical abuse in rural and urban areas, were at 29 per cent and 23 per cent, respectively.

2. Sexual & Reproductive Health & Rights -

We fancy a world where every woman has the right over their bodies and sexualities.

A woman should have the right and liberty to have a safe and legal abortion if that’s what she wants which is illegal in many countries.

No woman can call herself free when she does not own or control her own body.

3. GENDER GAP-

Even in the wealthiest of countries, women experience major inequality in the workforce.

According to some survey, women earn only $0.77 for every $1 earned by men.

Globally, the gender gap is more extensive. Women earn only one-tenth of the world’s income despite working for two-thirds of total work hours.

Empowering women to earn their fair share could lead uplift the world economies.

4. GENDER EQUALITY-

Equality is a recurrent issue when talking about the gender gap, female gender mutilation, child marriage, gender-based violence to name a few.

In a world, where 95% of the countries are led by a male head of state, it’s clear that we have to go a long way to before women everywhere are given a fair share.

Gender Equality is not a women’s issue, it is a human issue. It affects us all.

5. SEXISM-

Every woman has to deal with sexism on a day-to-day basis.

Any discrimination based on gender or the belief that man is superior to a woman is what sexism is.

Sexism is a way of maintaining male domination and power. The oppression may be economic, political, social or cultural.

It’s all just tip of the iceberg.

Despite this we get up every day, to do our bit and continue to make this world a better place.

Here’s to strong women,

May we know them,

May we raise them,

May we be them.

HAPPY INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY
