The Covid-19 pandemic has left the world at a standstill. It has now affected 216 countries globally and infected more than 10 million people worldwide. The pace at which the COVID-19 has hit the whole planet is alarming.

Mumbai, Maharashtra

According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt of India,’ The number of active cases currently stands at 210120 and the number of deaths reported is 16475’. India is now the fourth worst affected country by this pandemic. The number of recovered cases is, however, 321722.

India is the second-most populous country on the globe with a population of 135.26 crores. Despite what the official reports state, the ground reality is quite different. The implementation of a nationwide lockdown, at an early stage, helped India curb the virus as compared to countries like the USA and Brazil. The lockdown consequently had some ill effects on the economy as well.

Daily workers on foot

In India, the hardest hit by the pandemic are the daily wage workers & labourers. They were forced out of their jobs and had to flee to their native places on foot to survive. Small and medium businesses are holding on to their last thread to survive. Several companies had to cut off their employees just enough to manage cash flow. The unemployment rate in India has skyrocketed.

The health sector, as well, is struggling with not sufficient infrastructure and amenities to offer. The quarantine facilities in some of the rural parts of India have benches as beds for the people to be quarantined. They are unable to leave and are at the mercy of their respective authorities in charge.

The reality of the situation is, the pandemic has left millions of people vulnerable to necessities of life. People are hungry, infected and have nowhere to go.
